Jane Tingle Broderick

 

Dr. Broderick is currently an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood at East Tennessee State University. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses that focus on creative development of young children, as well as documentation and assessment of the learning process. These courses incorporate socio-constructivist principles.

Prior to coming to ETSU Dr. Broderick studied at the University of Massachusetts with Dr. George Forman, one of the editors of The Hundred Languages of Children: The Reggio Emilia Approach – Advance Reflections. For three years she served as the Atelierista, Documentarian, and Co-Teacher in the older classroom of the university’s Early Childhood Laboratory School (ECLS). At the ECLS Dr. Broderick worked with the director, Dotty Meyer, in the training and supervising of student teachers within a Reggio inspired practice.

Currently Dr. Broderick mentors the Child Study Center teaching staff at ETSU as they journey through their process of implementing inquiry practice that is Reggio inspired.

Dr. Broderick is available for consultation on documentation and assessment of learning and thinking, emergent curriculum, and creative development in early childhood and with adult learners. 

Her research interests include: inquiry-based learning, the role of materials and the environment on learning and development, the concepts underlying children’s play - particularly related to social interaction, and documentation.

With a background in Fine Art and Creativity Dr. Broderick has a deep knowledge of materials and the creative process, at the core of Reggio inspired practice and the basis of children’s many languages for learning.
