Swimming Fast & Front and Back

[conte crayon; about 40" x 50" each]

The shape of heads wearing bathing caps intrigued me and started me on a journey beginning with a self-portrait. Once begun, the images began to speak to me guiding my interest in ways to capture the play of light on the surface of the water and the dramatic contrast this created in relation to the figures I drew. The stark quality of figure within the context of such abstract movement spoke to the isolation I experienced as an artist.

Swimming Pool Series

This series is created in conte crayon. For two years running these images received honors from the Massachusetts Artists Fellowship Program. As a finalist in 1982 I exhibited in the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA. In 1983 as a fellow I exhibited in the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. There are 14 images to this series that were first exhibited "in the round" at the Fauve Gallery in Amherst, MA in 1985.
